comix wimmens

Ask anyone they'll tell you I dress like comic book characters. The world of Comic books is very masculine in tone and audience, so it seems like a unlikely medium for the creation strong, troubled and complex female characters. Our cultural mythology lacks these figures, especially in television and movies, but not in Love & Rockets.

Melina Gebbie is also a hero of my mine. She's illustrated Alan Moore's erotica series Lost Girls. The girls are sexual without being sexual objects. Their characters and motivation is every bit as engaging as Moore's other works like Watchmen and V for Vendetta.

One of my favorite graphic illustrators is Guido Crepax. Very sexy and very dark. Huge influence on Paul Pope and Frank Miller

Chyna Clugston-Major Blue Monday was pretty popular among my group of friends in high school, and we all dressed like Blue or Clover. I think that I own one of Clover's Cramps T-shirts.

other Pamelas

I notice that there are a lot of stylish Pams out there that put me to shame. It's like meeting someone with the same car as you. Instant connection. My conversation with pams tend to looks something like this

Pam: Your name is Pam, too?
Pam: yup! I love our name.
Pam: I love our name, too.

sickeningly, no?

1) Pamela Love- Jewelry designer, arbiter of dark materials

2) Pamela Tuohy- maker of eco-sensitive, nature-inspired jewelery collections.
3) Pamela, boutique owner of Kit 228

rodarted

I'm in love rodarte leggings, and the moment I saw them, i thought to myself, "Hey... I could knit that." I've been working on replicating that dropped- stitch webbiness. If it's too precise, it's no good.

I'm going to use much fuzzier yarn. that was just a test. what do you think?

fur qualms

I'm not going to lie. I like fur a lot, especially this season, but I can't in good conscience wear it. It's very smashing pumpkins 90's-trying-to-be-the-70's (how is that so timelessly cool?). I don't know...
(imgs from cookie jar)

Something about fur freaks me out. When I try on a fur jacket, all I can think about is someone skinning my cats and wearing them :(

I'm going to experiment with my knitting to get a textured, fuzzy/bobbley coat. Like these from topshop--only fuzzier.

buy once

T mag's blog's post on Issac Mizrahi's "style in the time of a recession" advice incited a barrage of comments from baffled consumers.

Here's what he said:

1. Discounts Are for Suckers
“Never buy anything that’s on sale. That’s always junk. … You’re just buying it because it’s cheap.”

2. Shop Constantly
“If you need clothes, don’t go shopping.” The best purchases are serendipitous! “If you need an evening dress, a fabulous evening dress, you’re never gonna find one.”

3. Splurge on Shoes
“Honestly, it starts with the shoes.” Preferably some “giant fetish shoes.”

4. Splurge on a Hairstylist
“Go to the guy you can’t afford.”

5. Spoiling Yourself Is Worth It
“If you go once and buy something expensive, a) it makes you into a wonderful object; and b) it educates.”

I can definitely understand why people are bewildered by this. It sounds wasteful and extravagant, but I really love it. I blame T for tonally manipulating these statements. He's not saying to fill up your closet with a bunch of useless shit-- just the opposite. You buy clothes whenever the urge strikes, and you have the money because you haven't spent it on crap you half-like during a sale or some other allotted time. I think about all the times I wandered into a flea market and found something great, only to look in my wallet and realize I spent all my money on dumb shit at forever21.

Also, a recession is time to invest in things that are well-made and will last. Quality not quantity. A lot of Americans have this notion that if there's an empty space in your room, drawer, or closet you must fill it to max capacity. That's why people are constantly getting bigger closets, bigger clothes, and storage facilities. If you spent more money on few stylish necessities, you're saving money in the end.

Clothing is really horrible asset. The value depreciates immediately and drastically when you throw away the receipt. From an economic standpoint, every time a garment remains in your closet you lose money. Fewer the better.

I'm trying to purge my space of useless shit. I want something simple and clean.

TOGA PARTY

Yatsuko Furata makes a very Southwestern inspired collection for TOGA. I'm really obsessed with the Southwest and structure, and the lovely folds, fringe, and detailing doesn't seem overworked. The pieces are light, playful, and decidedly American. I love the crap out of this collection!! Plus, I know I'm not the only one feeling nudes and sheer things lately...

Look at the accordion pleats on that chiffon shirt. And that collar is really smart.

music plug

my good friend luke henley has quite a little following in nyc because of word of mouth efforts of friends. I've heard him be compared to Pavement and Daniel Johnston, and he's seriously just as beautifully disturbed and irreverent as the best of them. He was in a band with my boyfriend for a little while before relocating to Arizona :*( "people are horseshit" and "Heal" are essentially American classics.
